Microsoft Clarity announced on August 3 that its AI Citations dashboard can now distinguish branded from non-branded grounding queries. The update adds query labels, filters and a Share of Authority breakdown by query type. Microsoft describes branded queries as those that refer directly to a brand, while non-branded queries cover broader topics and generic needs. For an exporter, the useful lesson is not merely that a dashboard gained another filter. Entity confirmation after a buyer knows the company and category discovery before the company is known are different GEO jobs and should not share one undifferentiated score.

Branded queries test whether the known entity is clear

When a retrieval query already includes a company, brand or product-family name, the information need often shifts toward verification. A buyer or AI system may look for the legal entity, service scope, model status, contact channel, policy, certification boundary or recent change. The site therefore needs consistent names and facts across About, product, policy, contact and update pages.

Branded query activity can also be created by exhibitions, advertising, sales outreach, distributors or existing customer conversations. It should not automatically be attributed to editorial work. Keep a calendar of material market activity and compare it with the page groups being cited. The correct question is whether the public site accurately completes the confirmation task.

A citation to a stale or ambiguous brand page is not a success merely because the brand was mentioned. Review whether the page identifies the correct entity, language, market and current product scope.

Non-branded queries test whether the problem is understood

Non-branded grounding queries are closer to category discovery, application fit, selection, comparison, compliance and delivery. A supplier must explain the buyer's problem in market language before introducing its own offer. A page about choosing a material for a temperature range needs operating boundaries and evidence, not a paragraph of corporate adjectives.

Broader query coverage does not mean the supplier has entered a qualified shortlist. Inspect the cited page and topic, then compare them with the markets and products the company can actually serve. A generic query may reveal a useful education opportunity, an irrelevant consumer use or a compliance question that requires specialist review.

Use separate content queues. Branded gaps may call for entity reconciliation, current policy information or clearer company proof. Non-branded gaps may call for a definition, comparison method, application guide or evidence-backed limitation.

Connect each query type to a page cohort

Branded analysis should focus on entity consistency, factual freshness, reputation and navigational completion. Non-branded analysis should focus on topic coverage, terminology, localized language and decision evidence. Combining both into one citation rate can hide two very different patterns: strong brand confirmation with weak category discovery, or useful topic citations with an unclear supplier identity.

Preserve date, language, market, query type, cited page and source system for every analysis. A vendor dashboard is an observation surface, not a complete account of every answer engine. Avoid turning a movement in one product into a claim about universal AI visibility.

Link the page cohorts deliberately. A non-branded application guide can lead to a relevant product family and company identity page. A branded page can lead back to the technical evidence that supports its claims. Same-language links help buyers continue without being pushed into an unrelated route.

What this means for Chinese exporters

Chinese exporters often alternate between brand campaigns and keyword production without defining the buyer task at each stage. A clearer website separates a confirmation layer from a discovery layer. The confirmation layer proves identity, capability and boundaries. The discovery layer answers a specific procurement question. Internal links connect the two without collapsing their measurement.

Sales teams should help maintain the classification. Early buyer questions may omit the company name, while later checks can include company, founder, product, complaint and policy terms. Public answers need to be accurate, reviewable and updated before a buyer or AI system asks for them.
