Microsoft Advertising made AI Max available for Search campaigns on August 27. Its published capabilities include search-term matching, text customization and final URL expansion, supported by reports for queries, assets and landing-page routing. Existing campaign controls, brand inclusion and exclusion, and term exclusions remain part of the operating boundary.
For exporters, final URL expansion is the most important website signal. A campaign may no longer send every visitor to one manually selected page. The system can choose another page it considers a better match for a detailed intent. Optimizing one campaign landing page is therefore not enough if product, solution, download or old event pages remain eligible destinations.
Every eligible URL can become the first buyer touchpoint
A specification page, industry solution, resource page or archived promotion may be the first page a buyer sees. If that page lacks the current model, market scope, language, delivery boundary or working contact route, the experience breaks after an apparently relevant ad. The website team needs to define which URLs are qualified for routing and which should be excluded, rewritten, redirected, deindexed or retired.
This decision cannot be left to crawler availability alone. A page can be technically accessible while being commercially unready. A useful eligibility gate asks whether the page identifies the product or service, supports its statements, matches the visitor language, explains the next step and has a responsible owner.
Maintain a page eligibility and routing register
Each routable page should record its purpose, intended query, product entity, applicable market, allowed brand terms, prohibited wording, update date, form state, owner and rollback action. The title, body, structured data, canonical and language should describe the same object. If automated text customization can draw from website content, outdated claims and obsolete parameters must be removed from the source pages, not merely hidden from one campaign.
The register should stay synchronized with the sitemap and content inventory. When a URL is removed, the campaign team needs to know whether traffic is redirected, excluded or sent to a replacement. When a product changes, every eligible page that can represent it needs review.
What this means for Chinese exporters
AI search advertising changes the unit of optimization from a keyword and one landing page to an interpreted website and a set of possible destinations. Sales and marketing should be able to explain which query reached which page, what the buyer saw and which form or action followed. Final URL expansion can add flexibility, but it does not replace the exporter's responsibility for product facts, geographic limits or follow-up ownership.
Platform-level performance statements should not be projected onto an individual exporter. The appropriate question is whether routing is accurate, understandable and recoverable in the company's own account and website.
Action checklist
- Export all indexable pages and classify them as route, observe, exclude, rewrite or retire.
- Check title, model, market, language, call to action, form and privacy notice on every eligible page.
- Maintain brand inclusion, brand exclusion and prohibited-term lists with an owner and effective date.
- Review query-to-landing-page reports weekly and compare intent, ad text, page facts and downstream events.
- Define an immediate response for wrong routing: pause expansion, exclude the URL or restore a fixed destination.
- Preserve a snapshot of the candidate pool and controls before every material test.
Turn automated routing into an auditable experiment
The first test should use a product group with a stable page structure and current content. Save the pre-test page inventory, exclusions, brand controls and baseline. During review, separate the effects of query expansion, text customization and destination routing instead of treating every change as one result.
If a route is wrong, the team should be able to identify whether the cause was page ambiguity, stale content, an exclusion gap or an incorrect campaign setting. That evidence makes the next test safer. AI Max is most useful when its flexibility sits on top of a website where every possible destination has already earned the right to receive a buyer.
The content owner and campaign owner should review the same routing report. Marketing can see the query and ad variation, while the website owner can verify the page version and form state. A shared incident record prevents the campaign team from repeatedly excluding URLs when the durable fix belongs in content structure or page governance.
