A sales assistant may pass privacy, refusal and escalation tests in English and then be launched in Thai, Indonesian or Arabic after a user-interface translation. That rollout assumes the safety behavior travels with the words. It may not.
Microsoft's September 16 discussion of responsible AI identifies widening geographic and linguistic readiness gaps even as adoption accelerates. It also points to work on Southeast Asian language safety and multilingual, multicultural benchmarks. For global sales teams, the practical issue is broader than translation quality: risk appears through local expressions, abbreviations, mixed language and culturally specific forms of trust.
A buyer can request a bank-account change without using the English phrases in the original safety set. A scammer can imitate a familiar local payment provider or job title. A misspelling, romanized phrase or voice transcription may cause the same sensitive action to be classified as routine support.
Rebuild the high-risk set in each market
Start with actual business actions: changing payment details, collecting identity documents, bypassing a distributor territory, requesting confidential pricing, claiming certification or asking a user to open an executable file. For each action, include formal language, colloquial wording, common spelling errors, romanization and code-switching. Define whether the assistant should answer, refuse, request verification or transfer the conversation.
Product terminology needs local review as well. An English term may have a narrower industry meaning in one market, while its direct translation suggests a broader capability. Keep model identifiers, standard numbers and units as stable anchors. Localize the explanation around them, and show the source term when no precise equivalent exists.
Escalation must preserve the original message. A queue should carry language, market, customer identity, trigger, evidence and urgency to a reviewer who can understand the source wording. If the reviewer sees only a machine translation, the ambiguity or social cue that created the risk may already have disappeared.
Score language, facts and safety separately
Fluency, factual accuracy and safe behavior are different dimensions. A natural response that changes a part number is factually wrong. A technically accurate response that accepts unverified payment details is operationally unsafe. A refusal to answer an ordinary specification question is unnecessary blocking. One average score can conceal all three failures.
Roll out capability by risk. Product discovery and document navigation can open first. Order status can follow with authenticated records. Price, payment, contract and certification actions should retain accountable approval until the local test set and escalation operation have been demonstrated.
After launch, review real failures without turning customer conversations into an unrestricted training set. Remove personal information, preserve the linguistic pattern that mattered and add a controlled regression case. A language with low volume still needs a defined owner and stopping rule; it should not become the unmonitored edge of the system.
The number of supported languages is a weak measure of maturity. A stronger measure is whether the company knows which tasks are safe in each language, what evidence the assistant may use and who receives a case when the local wording changes the risk.
The evaluation set should not be left to translators alone. Local salespeople know the abbreviations buyers actually use. Finance teams recognize the wording commonly used in payment-change fraud. Service staff know which polite or indirect phrases can conceal urgency. Convert those observations into de-identified regression cases and label the expected action: answer, verify, refuse or escalate. That makes the test about business behavior rather than surface fluency.
Language coverage should be published internally as a capability matrix. One market may support product discovery and document navigation but require a person for quotations and payment changes. Another may allow authenticated order status but not contract interpretation. If no qualified reviewer can handle a low-volume language, the system should narrow its actions and state that limit. An English pass rate is not evidence that a local safety operation exists.
Review the matrix whenever a new channel, model or voice layer is introduced. A text workflow that behaved correctly may change after speech recognition removes punctuation, normalizes names or mistranscribes a number. The release decision therefore belongs to the complete local path, from the buyer's original expression to the human or system action that follows.
