At an August 28 briefing on China's trade in services and preparations for the 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services, the Ministry of Commerce said it would support the international competitiveness of manufacturing-linked services. The categories named include research and development, design, testing, repair and supply-chain logistics. For a Chinese manufacturer, the opportunity is not captured by adding “service available” to a product page. Work that has historically lived inside sales conversations and engineer experience needs to become an offer that an overseas buyer can understand, procure and accept.

Identify repeatable service units

Many manufacturers already provide selection advice, drawing review, sample testing, installation guidance, remote diagnosis and spare-parts coordination. These activities often have no stable name, owner or boundary. Begin by separating repeatable services from informal support and from work that requires a specific qualification.

The unit should describe exactly what it is. Remote fault triage is not the same as a final repair determination. Design guidance is not necessarily an assumption of engineering responsibility. Testing a sample under stated conditions does not establish universal product suitability. Clear boundaries make the offer easier to buy and protect the delivery team from an open-ended commitment.

Map each unit to the product families, markets and team capabilities it actually supports. If eligibility depends on destination, standard or facility, use “assessment required” instead of claiming broad availability.

Define the buyer inputs and supplier deliverables

A service needs prerequisites just as a product needs a specification. Does the buyer need to provide a serial number, operating environment, log file, drawing, photograph, sample or secure system access? What can the supplier do when part of that information is missing?

The deliverable should be more precise than “support provided.” It may be a test report, modification recommendation, issue register, repair record, training package, logistics plan or acceptance-meeting note. State the format, language, version, expected process and usage limitation.

Sensitive data also requires a handling path. A drawing or machine log should have an identified recipient, purpose, retention rule and deletion or return process. Do not ask a buyer to upload operational information into an ungoverned message thread simply because the service is digital.

Put acceptance and change into the workflow

Services depend on collaboration. Define the start condition, milestones, buyer feedback window, acceptance criteria and out-of-scope change route. If the buyer changes the model, market or technical condition, the team should determine whether the original service scope and evidence remain valid.

Testing, repair and regulated design work need additional clarity about the applicable standard, certificate scope and responsible entity. An advisory conversation cannot replace a formal conclusion from an authorized provider. The public offer should never exceed the capability the company has verified.

Acceptance records should identify the service version, input set, delivered files, open limitations and approving people. That record helps both parties distinguish completed work from a draft recommendation.

Build an independent buyer decision page

Burying all services at the bottom of a product page makes separate procurement difficult. A service page should answer who it is for, required inputs, workflow, deliverables, language and time-zone coverage, data handling, pricing route and human contact. Link the page to related products and link relevant product pages back to the service.

The website, downloadable scope and sales script should use the same version. If the service changes, publish a change date and keep active proposals tied to the earlier scope where applicable. Machine-readable fields can help buyer agents compare the offer, but they must reflect the same human-approved boundary.

What this means for Chinese exporters

Service productization can extend a manufacturer from a one-time shipment into the buyer's operating lifecycle. It begins as delivery governance, not marketing packaging. Clear scope, input, output and acceptance help sales qualify opportunities and help engineering allocate resources.

Start with a frequent, low-risk service such as public-document training, a standard selection workshop or controlled remote triage. Review several real deliveries before expanding the public promise into more complex design, testing or repair work.
