An international buyer can order furniture through a website and receive it in a shipping container. The same buyer can negotiate a design service in person and receive the work remotely. Both transactions involve digital technology, but at different stages. A market plan that treats them as one undifferentiated online opportunity can put money into the wrong part of the business.
UNCTAD's release calendar records October 15 releases for annual analytical data on domestic and international e-commerce sales and bilateral internationally digitally ordered trade, covering periods through 2025. The indicator names deserve as much attention as the release date. They identify the part of a transaction being measured, not simply whether an industry is associated with technology.
The jointly authored Handbook on Measuring Digital Trade provides the underlying distinction between digital ordering and digital delivery. Its second edition was published in 2023; it is established methodological guidance, not a newly introduced October rule.
Match the measure to the commercial question
For an overseas distributor sourcing from China, online discovery is often only the beginning. A product video may lead to a technical exchange, samples, negotiations and a later order. The first contact's digital origin does not, by itself, settle how the completed transaction belongs in a particular statistical series.
Keep discovery, inquiry and ordering separate when mapping that journey. A request for a drawing is not necessarily an order. A website form may collect requirements without accepting a purchase. Before using a digital-ordering estimate to size an opportunity, read the dataset's definition and coverage rather than classifying every internet-originated relationship in the same way.
Delivery raises a different question. A connected machine remains a physical object that must reach the buyer. Its software features do not turn the movement of the machine into digital delivery. A remote design or support service supplied alongside it may have a different delivery arrangement, but that arrangement needs to be understood from the actual work and transaction scope.
This matters for investment. If buyers struggle to communicate configurations, quantities and requested dates, a clearer inquiry-to-order process may be useful. If a remotely delivered service repeatedly lacks the necessary customer inputs or an agreed output format, adding more promotional content does not solve the delivery problem. The diagnosis should identify the stage that is failing.
For a Chinese exporter and an overseas commercial partner, discussing those stages together is more productive than asking whether the business is sufficiently digital. The exporter may control product information and factory commitments, while the partner manages local customer interactions. Each can improve a specific handoff without pretending that one platform automatically completes the whole transaction.
Check overlap before adding market totals
A service can be digitally ordered and digitally delivered. Consequently, two figures describing those categories are not automatically independent pieces of a larger total. Check whether the publisher has already adjusted for overlap, which transactions are covered and whether the measure concerns goods, services or both.
The practical error is easy to make in a presentation: one chart shows digital ordering, another shows digital delivery, and a combined headline promises a larger addressable market. Without a consistent definition, the result may count part of the same activity twice. Even a correctly constructed aggregate would still require a separate assessment of the product and buyers the company can actually serve.
Use a small transaction map before building a large opportunity model. Select one product or service category, identify where the buyer discovers it, where requirements become an order and how fulfillment occurs. Preserve unknowns. If a contract bundles work that cannot reliably be separated in the available records, describe that limitation instead of assigning invented percentages to the components.
For internal management, those three fields answer different questions. Discovery helps evaluate content and channels. Ordering helps evaluate commercial handling. Delivery helps evaluate the work needed to fulfill the agreement. This is a proposed operating record, not a replacement for official statistical classification or reporting instructions.
Digital documents do not change what is being delivered
Moving shipment paperwork into a shared online process may improve how changes are communicated. It does not convert the physical cargo into a digitally delivered product. The distinction is useful when an operations improvement is presented as evidence of a new market category.
Our discussion of dependencies between shipment documents addresses that document-level work. Market measurement should remain separate. Read the full indicator name, establish its transaction boundary and only then ask what it implies for the buyer journey or service the business intends to develop.
